CenterPoint Energy Deploys Temporary Emergency Power Generation Units to San Antonio

CenterPoint Energy is bolstering the state’s power grid by deploying 15 temporary emergency power generation units to San Antonio. This initiative, spanning two months for deployment and potentially lasting up to two years in service, aims to provide crucial support for Texas’s energy infrastructure and mitigate potential power shortages in the San Antonio area.

The move will also deliver tangible financial benefits to CenterPoint Energy customers in the Houston region. By 2027, Houston-area customers can expect to see an approximate $2 monthly reduction in their energy bills. This cost savings is achieved by removing the operational expenses associated with these emergency units from customer bills. Each of these units possesses the capacity to power roughly 30,000 homes, highlighting their significant contribution to the state’s overall power supply.

Importantly, CenterPoint Energy will not profit from operating these emergency generation units. The agreement with ERCOT explicitly prohibits any profit generation from this effort. The overall value of CenterPoint Energy’s contribution to the state of Texas through this deployment is valued at approximately $200 million.
