PJM has proactively declared a Hot Weather Alert for its entire operating region, encompassing 13 states and the District of Columbia, in anticipation of a prolonged heat wave from June 22nd to 25th. This alert is a standard measure taken by PJM before periods of high temperatures—typically above 90 degrees Fahrenheit—and increased humidity, designed to ready personnel and infrastructure for heightened electricity consumption. The anticipated extended period of temperatures exceeding 90 degrees is expected to significantly elevate electricity demand.

To further ensure sufficient power availability, PJM has also implemented a generator maintenance outage recall. This directive requires generators currently offline for scheduled maintenance to resume operation within 72 hours, bolstering the overall generation capacity available to meet anticipated customer needs during the heat wave.

Current forecasts indicate peak electricity demand could reach approximately 158,000 megawatts (MW) on June 23rd and 24th. This surpasses PJM’s previously projected summer peak load of 154,000 MW. While Sunday, June 22nd, is expected to see a load in the mid-140 gigawatt (GW) range. The National Weather Service is predicting above-average temperatures throughout the summer, particularly along the Atlantic coast.

PJM’s highest recorded peak demand occurred in 2006, reaching 165,563 MW. Last year’s summer peak was approximately 152,700 MW. Currently, PJM possesses roughly 179,200 MW of generation capacity, supplemented by approximately 7,900 MW secured through demand response programs, which incentivize customers to curtail electricity usage during periods of high system stress. A specialized team utilizes advanced technology to continuously balance electricity supply and demand, managing the power grid around the clock. This team develops contingency plans to address potential impacts from weather events, emergencies, or equipment failures, adjusting power resources to match demand fluctuations and preventing strain on transmission lines and facilities.
